What is it?
Collaborative mediation is a style of mediation where two or more people are encouraged to work toward resolution in a transparent and peaceful manner. The goal is to support you to unfold the issues and create fair agreements that will stand the test of time.
Principles
- Work together with a shared purpose
- Be open: ideas, issues & concerns are transparent and 'on the table'
- Honor each participant's right to self-determination
- Honor those not present. (This might include children, siblings, parents, grandparents, co-workers, whichever applies.)
Process
- Have authentic conversation
- Speak clearly
- Listen openly
- Interact cooperatively
- Honor each person's ideas, desires, knowledge & skills
- Consider possibilities and choices on multiple levels
- Make decisions
Mediator's Role
- Invite each person to speak clearly & listen carefully
- Facilitate discussion
- Be multi-partial (concerned for everyone)
- Highlight issues raised
- Be transparent
- Educate participants about process
- Guide or offer ideas, when requested
- Refer to community services and other professionals
- Record agreements
